This is a monument to failure! I
wanted to redefine the meaning of the word 'hero". This is not David
slaying Goliath, this in Jack Nicholson's character Jake Gittes in "Chinatown",
who despite his best effort fails in the end. We consider our athletes
heros. A baseball player is considered great if he has a record of one
success in three tries! What's more, our best baseball heros are not cast
aside even after blowing a championship opportunity for their team. So,
the notion of an ideal hero is false and arguably unnecessary.Michelangelo
depiction of David, the hero, shows him just before the fateful swing.
Bernini's depicts David in full motion of swinging. My hero is just done
swinging and the focus is solely on his body and internalstate, rather
than the external world. What I celebrate here is the attempt not the result.
I want to show the power and beauty of the hero even when he fails and
his body is thrown off-balance, twisted and in great discomfort. |
