Broken Men , 6" to 13" figures, various dimensions, hydrocal, plastic and spray paints, 2002

These compositions were improvisation on the them of the figures from the Ascension project for Vanderbilt University. Several dozen pieces were cast from the molds and allowed to break freely during the demolding process. They were then painted in loud LEGO-inspired colors and arranged to create groupings based on pose, truncation of the limbs and color progression. While not a mixed media project in the traditional sense, the color variations and the manner they were installed exclude them from being considered figurative sculpture. Needless to say, the response was just as mixed!!
